I’m fairly certain there is nothing that the Bromberg brothers, owners of the Blue Ribbon team of restaurants, can’t do. They have multiple brasseries, sushi restaurants, and fried chicken places. The same team shouldn’t be able to do all these wildly varied concepts so well, but they do.
The brothers’ newest venture is Blue Ribbon Sushi Izakaya, an upscale Japanese style tavern and sushi bar. Ascend the steps the second floor of the SIXTY LES Hotel and you’ll find the dimly lit space. Both the dining area and the sushi counter are elegant and intimate. The rooms accommodate either intimate dates or large groups comfortably.
The menu is designed to provide whatever type of experience you desire including vegetables, fish, and meat both raw and prepared. Plates range from small dishes to family style platters. To start, the miso marinated black cod is the most delicate and expertly cooked piece of fish I’ve ever experienced. Their version of shumai is light and juicy, in both the shrimp and pork varieties. You can then pick your own sushi adventure from the expansive sushi bar. I suggest allowing them to assemble a platter for your table, since everything is expertly sliced, wrapped & rolled. Two favorites were the Blue Ribbon (lobster & caviar) and the Kaki Fri (fried oysters). Whatever you choose to dine on will surely be a pleasure much like all of their properties. Here’s what we had:
Shrimp Shumai - Homemade Dumplings
Miso Marinated Black Cod - Pickled Turnip
Oxtail & Bone Marrow Fried Rice
Sakana San Shu - Yellowtail, Tuna & Salmon
Kaki Fri - Fried Oysters & Lettuce
Dragon - Eel, Avocado & Radish Sprouts
Blue Ribbon - 1/2 Lobster, Shiso & Black Caviar
