Ask anyone what the most iconic NYC food is and they will inevitably mention pizza. Wars have been waged over the best slices, families divided. It's not uncommon to see food tour groups hopping from Bleeker St Pizza, to John's, to Joe's in an hour. Everyone has their opinion of the best, but it's indisputable the best pizza in American lays in New York. Below is a selection of the best long running & new-to-the-game pizza joints in Manhattan.
John's Pizzeria- this institution has been around since 1929. The crust is thin & the sauce is lightly layered. This coal-fire brick over pizza is only available as a whole pie. Just gives me an excuse to eat more.
Joe's - this place has been serving the quintessential NY slice since 1975. People line up for the chewy crust & fresh mozz slices. I am a huge fan of the thick & cheesy grandma slice.
Bleeker Street Pizza - this is my favorite slice in NYC. It is Tuscan style thin crust pizza. The sauce is sweet, and I love the basil baked on top. It's just as good in the middle of the day as it is when I'm drunk at 2am.
Artichoke Pizza - nothing will ever cure a drunk food craving like a slice of artichoke pizza. It is layered with thick & gooey bechamel and sometimes you even find an artichoke slice layered in there. The other options are great here too, but this is a must. You can find it in Manhattan & Brooklyn
Prince Street Pizza -this place serves up arguably the best grandma slice on earth. The dough is thick & the crust is crunchy. The pepperoni cups curl up making beautiful little grease pools
Rubirosa - the crust is thin & crisp, the tomato sauce is sweet, and the mozz is fresh. Check out the meatballs here too, they are some of the best in the city.
Marta - this is not your typical NY pizza but still worth mentioning. The crust is lighter & airier than most. The topping are unique & diverse. Try the carbonara pizza which is swimming in sinful cheese and egg yolk
Motorino - this place lands on both my Manhattan & Brooklyn pizza lists. The crust on these Neapolitan style pies are incredible. They have a great antipasti menu and a range of options for pizza toppings. My favorite is the Soppressata Piccante with tomato sauce, fior di latte, spicy soppressata & chili flakes.
Patsy's Pizzeria - this coal-oven pizzeria has been in existence since 1933. They have perfected the art of the NY pie with chewy crust and gooey cheese
Lombardi's - I cant say that I think they are the absolute best, but they were the first & that makes Lombardi's worth mentioning. Opening in 1897, Lombardi's became American's first pizzeria. The clam pizza is the star of the show here.
