I hate baseball. I'd rather watch paint dry or attend a Donald Trump support rally. It's worthless to me. I've been getting dragged to baseball games since I was a little kid by my father who always had season tickets to the Pirates. He tells me I don't understand the subtle nuances of this incredibly intricate game. True, I know nothing about it. Some guys run in circles, people spit tobacco, balls, bats, the end. It's like the sports equivalent to the missionary position. I sit there half fanning interest until it's time to do something that'll excite me.
All that being said, when I'm invited to try the 2016 food offerings for Citi Field, I get my ass to Queens. What I found blew me away. Stadiums all over America have stepped up their culinary game in recent years, that's no surprise. Game goers expect more than just a $12 sausage and some nachos these days. Restauranteurs have responded by getting into the game in a big way.
Citi Field is the shining example of this. The great Danny Meyer has been slangin his shack burgers there for years now. His catering company Union Square Events oversees daily operations and culinary management of their many on-site restaurants. USE runs El Verano Taqueria, Blue Smoke, Cantina, Box Frites, and will open the new pizza counter Papa Rosso this season.
The sandwich rundown is my favorite. The king of meat, Pat Lofreida makes a mean cheesesteak. The 3 star Tribeca Grill is offering an insane red wine braised short rib sandwich. Josh Capon, the chef from hits such as Bowery Meat Company and Burger & Barrel will be bringing grilled cheese to your mouths. The biggest surprise was that David Chang will be bringing treats from his Momofuku empire to Citi. When the Mets announced this at the press conference yesterday it was as though they had scooped the #1 draft pick of all time. You can now get Fuku fried chicken and Milk Bar cookies.
There is so much to see and try. It's more like a culinary pilgrimage than going to a baseball game. Have meatballs or steak pizzaiola heros from the famed Raos. Sample arancini from Arancini Brothers, sushi from Daruma, empanadas from Nuchas, or wings from Dan & Johns. There are plenty options to satisfy your sweet tooth as well. I was pretty sure I went to a baseball field and not Smorgasburg? And by the way, the classic standby of a Nathan’s dog and a beer are of course available. Check out what we'll be having (full rundown list at the end):
