This 24hr Latin diner has been a late night and early morning NYC staple for years. The laid back, no frills dining room is long and offers tons of table and counter seating. In terms of food there are a ton of choices to cure most cravings. You'll find a huge menu of comfort food classics with a Latin flare (think burgers with pulled pork, mac n' cheese with chicharrons). Breakfast is served all day and you can choose from things like hash with beef short rib & chile de arbol, huevos rancheros and empanadas. Portions are large, ingredients & plating are thoughtful and the price is very reasonable. Full bar is available.

Nickel & Diner is not your momma's diner. Opened in 2016 by a young couple from Hong Kong, the restaurant is a modern, upscale version of the traditional diner concept. The space is like a lifestyle Instagram dream with modern, sharp design elements everywhere. Patrons may grab a drink from their to-go coffee stand or sit at one of the many counter seats and booths. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner with the menu changing slightly throughout the day. Breakfast ranges from classics like eggs benedict to more adventurous offerings like a kale cashew bowl with sweet potato, avocado, asparagus, green beans & farro. Dinner is more upscale with items like steak tartare, crab fettuccine, and roasted branzino. The burger with griddled onions & American cheese is worth the trip alone. Full bar coming soon.

The small, casual storefront that was the original Black Tap opened just a few years ago and has rapidly expanded to 4 NYC locations. Restaurants range in size but each is laid back with an impressive coating of graffiti artwork. If you don't know this place you've probably still seen their milkshakes, um, everywhere that media exists and their massive lines at each store. They have over the top, ultra Instagrammable shakes coated with every type of sweet. The real star of the menu, however, are the sandwiches. You can choose from over12 options of creative burger toppings, falafel burger, or an excellent fried chicken. The menu undisputedly offers one of best burgers in New York and the classic is absolutely perfect - juicy & flavorful, topped with perfectly melted cheese, crisp fresh lettuce/tomato, and special sauce. It is undoubtedly worth the wait, and I NEVER say that.

Cannibal Liquor House is a bar by the Cannibal team, located next door to the original restaurant. The atmosphere is casual & dark, with a large bar and plenty of seating. As the name would suggest, they offer an array of cocktails and an impressive menu of bar bites. The offerings are meat heavy but there is a surprising range of vegetable friendly dishes. There are tons of snacks to graze on like house made chips, everything pretzels, and onion rings all done very well. If you'd like something more substantial burrata, clams, and even octopus are available. The star is the sandwiches, most exciting of which is the towering fried green tomato "burger" that comes piled high with two patties, bacon, smoked aioli and goat cheese. It's a fun place for casual evening or happy hour specials.

New York's newest food hall has arrived, this time in downtown Brooklyn. The ambitious project houses 40 vendors with a massive variety in cuisine types. You will find famous NYC staples like Katz's & The Arepa Lady as well as many newcomers. Whether you are craving poke, paella or pierogies, your needs will be satisfied here. I would opt for the more adventurous items and try Korean steamed buns from Bunsmith , grilled Pakistani meats at BK Jani, or Vietnamese plates from Bunker. The hall is also equipped with a show kitchen, cocktail bar & daily live programming.

I don't find my way into Gowanus very frequently, but A&E Supply owner Adam Harvey has given me (and many other people it seems) a reason to make the trip. The restaurant is part coffee shop, part butcher shop and part cafe. Harvey knows a thing or two about what he's doing, having come from the kitchens of Danny Meyer, Jean Georges, and David Burke. His restaurant is casual, with communal tables and a large open kitchen. The menu is stacked with comfort food like a buffalo chicken wedge salad, meatball parm, and hot fried chicken. The sandwiches are insanely good, with the meat coming from their own butcher shop. The roast beef with fried shallots, arugula and horse radish mayo will make you wonder why you ever bothered eating other roast beef before. When it comes to their burger they don't fuck around either. The meat is ground in house and served simply on a fresh bun with cheese and it is perfection.

Holy fucking comfort food! This place is like my fat kid dreams come true. Harlem Shake has two locations open for breakfast, lunch & dinner. The interior is modeled after 1950's casual soda shops but luckily they have beer & wine as well. The menu reads like a novel of food that will cure any craving or hangover. There is a huge list of vastly different sandwiches from juicy fried chicken, to loaded hot dogs, and battered fried fish. The burgers are a special Pat LaFrieda meat blend and seared off perfectly. My favorites were the patty melts & grilled cheese which are stuffed with enough cheese to clog your heart for a month. All gluttony aside, the food is done extremely well and there wasn't one dish I wouldn't happily shove in my face again. Don't forget to grab a shake.

I met Jordan Andino on my birthday, and a happy birthday it was! He is the wide smiling, charming personality behind 2nd City. Jordan's colorful persona is reflected in his brightly colored restaurant and menu. The space is super tiny with just 12 bar seats, and you'll most certainly wait in line but it will be 100% worth it. The menu was first described to me as "Asian ingredients in Mexican vessels" which is pretty spot on. There are Filipino ingredients wrapped up in bao buns, tacos, burritos, and rice bowls. The fast casual menu is crazy flavorful and constantly updated with weekly specials to keep things interesting. If you want to eat literal crack, head there on the weekends for the plan b-rito which is a flour tortilla stuffed with longanisa, eggs, cheese, ham, avocado, bacon and salsa.

I found the epicenter of suits and business meetings and men that will hopefully marry me and give me a mansion so that I don't have to work anymore. It resides at a steakhouse in Midtown Manhattan. There are actually 12 locations of BLT Steak today, showing that yes, the public has spoken and they want more. The dining room is elegant & decorated sparsely. The menu consists of big fat California cabs and good ol' American steakhouse classics. The obvious staples are available - crab cakes, wedge salad, raw bar, and tuna tartar. There is a definite focus on presentation and fresh ingredients. Steaks are USD Prime with many cuts to choose from and an excellent char. If steak isn't your thing (because you have bad taste) the chef has allotted space for fish, lamb, chicken, and a massive assortment of side dishes. Bring someone else's wallet if you can; this doesn't come cheap.

Owners of my favorite summer time hang spot, Pig Beach, have opened a year-round venue in Greenwich Village. Unlike its sister, Pig Bleeker is contemporary and sleek...plus there's walls. Good god do I love the food that chef/owner Matt Abdoo pumps out of this kitchen. He describes his menu as “refined, smoke-centric comfort food." Lunch, dinner, and the soon-to-launch brunch are all a home run. At lunch time Abdoo serves up phenomenal sandwiches piled high with pit beef, smoked pastrami, double patty burgers, and muffalettas. At dinner you'll find refined comfort food like grandma's meatballs & lasagna with smoked duck ragu. They might have the greatest chicken on planet earth - smoked and then fried, served for the table with cheesy grits & waffles. Whether you go for sandwiches, fresh pasta, or a whole hunk of beef, every dish is guaranteed to delight. Easily my favorite restaurant opening of 2017.

Top chef alum Dale Talde has added a new project to the growing Three Kings Restaurant Group empire. This time they have ventured into the world of sports bars. Atlantic Social is situated behind the Barclays Center and it is truly a massive space. Have drinks & watch a game in one of three sprawling dining spaces or their 40 seat bar. The large communal space is perfect for playing trivia, shuffleboard, pool, or watching drunk friends sing karaoke. Fare includes crowd pleasing bar classics with a bit of a twist. You'll find general tso chicken wings, smoked ham & pineapple pizza and a double patty burger with special sauce. Talde has incorporated some higher-end bar food options as well if your whiskey buzz leaves you craving something a little bar-bougie. There are pastas, ciopino, and a ribeye on deck.

Over the last several years NYC has exploded with food halls. The people have spoken, and variety packed into one convenient space is what they want. The second Gotham Market location has opened in Fort Greene with some newcomers as well as existing New York favorites. This location is vast and modern industrial with tons of seating and full bars. Here you'll choose from 7 options and eat your way around the globe without walking more than 20 steps. Grab barbecue ribs at Mason Jar, lobster rolls as Crabby Shack, and juicy fried chicken from Flip Bird. You can also have a semi-formal dining experience from tapas experts at Boqueria.
